Infrared inspection or IR inspection of an electrical equipment is very crucial. It can be stated that the Infrared inspection is done by following a few procedures. In the first step a camera that is “thermal-sensitive” is used. With this the hot-spots of the equipments can be spotted immediately. Then the hot spot is recorded on a diskette by taking a snap or by recording a video of the item. Thereafter recommendations are made.

Since it requires a lot of maintenance work, there needs to be judicial approach towards the inspection so that it results in high reliability. There are a number of critical systems and equipments which need an infrared scanning once in a year in the least. Only a proper scanning can ensure a proper working of the equipments. The repair work can take a lot of time and can even interfere with the normal functioning of the organization where the inspection is being conducted. In a typical procedure of infrared inspection the technician normally starts off with the operation with his list of the equipments that need to be checked. In organizations like a hospital; some of the equipments that are checked include panel boards, fused switches, bus ways, motor control centers, and transfer switches to mention a few.
The thermal scanners which are black-and-white are used for infrared scanning. This requires cooling with liquid-nitrogen. The color camera which is a self-cooled system eliminates the need for liquid nitrogen. The infrared inspection uses the fact that the equipments radiate heat energy. Then the temperature of the body is calibrated in color or black-and-white. The components of a color system include a thermal-sensing camera and a battery pack which is rechargeable and portable.
